2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships

○ Venue : Chungju City, Chungcheongbuk-do Province

○ Competition Event : 20 events (18 official events, 2 special events)

○ Participation : 100 countries / 4,000 Peoples (Athletes and Officials)

Before even the break of dawn, August 21st 2019, seven of Calgary’s top wushu athletes were flying over the Pacific ocean en route to Chungju, Korea to participate in the 2nd World Martial Arts Masterships (http://www.mastership.org/home_eng/main.php). Led by Grandmaster Cai and Coach Fang, the team stopped by to train in Guangzhou, China, withstanding the 35 degree weather to hone their skills a final time before the competition. There, they trained with world wushu champion, Jianming Li, amongst other renowned athletes and coaches.
 

It would be a week later that the team would land in Korea and make their way to Chungju. With a total of 14 registered events – 2 per person, there were not going to be many chances to stand on the podium, especially against the professional athletes hailing from Asia.
 

It would be two days of fierce competition before flying home with their winnings. The Calgary Taichi and Martial Arts College took home 3 bronze medals and 1 gold medal.
 

On the first day of competition, Winnie Cai broke into bronze place for her Women’s Changquan (fist) routine, beating out almost all the female athletes at the competition.
 

The second day began with Jason Chen-Leung nabbing an unexpected bronze medal in Men’s Daoshu (broadsword).
 

Wrapping up the competition on a high note, our team crossed the finish line with two more podium finishes in Women’s Qiangshu (spear). Eva Lee finished with a bronze medal and Winnie Cai took home the gold, making her the undisputed champion of the category.
